KWAJALEIN FORECAST
DISCUSSION
A period of
slightly wetter weather is likely later tonight into early tomorrow across the Kwajalein
Atoll. The Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) currently resides across the
south-central RMI and will be close enough to push an area of modest trade wind
convergence through the Atoll later tonight and tomorrow morning, increasing
shower coverage to isolated. A heavier
shower or two may be possible, as mid-levels are quite moist. Additionally, a Tropical Upper Tropospheric
Trough (TUTT) is well-positioned to provide colder temperatures and divergence
aloft, so a stray thunderstorm may be possible.
However, this risk will be mitigated by the lack of more robust
low-level convergence needed for deeper convection. Winds will be predominantly
out of the east-northeast at speeds in the low teens, with some higher gusts
possible near showers. By tomorrow afternoon, the trade wind convergence will
move out and allow drier conditions to resume.
Another area of trade wind convergence may bring a slightly greater
increase in shower coverage and stray thunderstorm chances tomorrow night into
Sunday, with mostly dry weather expected to return by Monday. Next week, the
ITCZ may slowly reorganize and bring gradually increasing shower and stray
thunderstorm chances throughout the week.
However, this is a long way out and far from certain. Shower coverage will
be <10% early tonight, increasing to 10-15% late tonight into tomorrow
morning, and decreasing to <10% tomorrow afternoon. Combined seas on the
open ocean will 3-5 feet. SMS
